For naturalisation in the Canton of Zurich, applicants must have basic knowledge of Switzerland, the Canton of Zurich, and life in their municipality. The corresponding basic knowledge test covers topics such as geography, politics, history, religion, public holidays, work, education, and the insurance system.

Test format and duration

The test lasts 60 minutes and is conducted on a computer at the school. There is no oral exam.

Requirements

In the following situations, applicants do NOT have to take the test:

  • You are currently attending compulsory school in Switzerland.
  • You are currently doing an apprenticeship or attending a gymnasium in Switzerland.
  • You have attended compulsory school in Switzerland for 5 years, including at least 3 years at lower secondary level (e.g. Sek A, B, C).
  • You have completed an apprenticeship or gymnasium in Switzerland.
